Swearing at Motorists' Tuesday's Pretzel Night is a better introduction to the songwriting talents of Dave Doughman than their self-released debut. Whereas the debut's muddy production and noisy detours distracted listeners from the good songs that are actually on there, Tuesday's Pretzel Night is very straightforward from the get-go.
"All the President's Men" is just Doughman on an acoustic guitar, the song is short and sweet, the melody is quite nice, and his vocals sound great. Songs like "Painfully Obvious," "Speedracer's Lament," and "Two Blocks from the River" also benefit from the same stripped down formula. "Feeling Transparent" and "Before the Flood" are the true standouts of the EP, finally delivering the exciting and explosive sound that they have pursued on albums such as More Songs from The Mellow Struggle and Number Seven Uptown.
At ten songs, Tuesday's Pretzel Night packs a lot of punch considering the seven-inch format, and is definitely worth hearing for fans of the band; although copies have become fairly difficult to find. Almost as difficult to find as an edible pretzel at The Hills on any given Tuesday night in Dayton.
