swearing at motorists review

review taken from sponic

This CD, being a reissue of their first limited cassette release, shows the roots of the current Swearing at Motorist sound: minimalistic and intense. More personal and experimental than their later albums, songs like "Soundtrack for a Nightmare" and "Cabin Fever" are schizophrenic, 4-track excursions into the mind of lead singer and guitarist Dave Doughman. "New Teen Anthem" and "Resin Completed the Task" are even darker, but rock harder, than the other two.

Perfect for smoking pot in the country are "Ballad of Shane & Tanya" or the multitude of sad and beautiful folk instrumentals that populate the album. Not that S@M are into trite sentimentalism for its own sake (like some of Lou Barlows less-than-sterling work), but damn, do they tug at your heart strings. Better than Neil Young on acid.
