Ohio duo Swearing at Motorists have released their latest, "This Flag Signals Goodbye." Fleshed out with help from friends and overdubs, this is not a minimalist record. Instead, it features short, crisp tunes with three equal influences: '90s indie rock a la Sebadoh or early Guided by Voices, '60s garage pop with psychedelic twists, and early '80s pre-synth-heavy new wave. There are also some good, sparse folk tunes. Lyrically the band veers between simple pensiveness to word stews, reflecting the breadth and variety of the music.
