Swearing at Motorists, at Empty Bottle. $8. 773-276-3600. "And I can't decide if I've made up my mind/ Or if I'm just losing it," shrugs guitarist-vocalist Dave Doughman on Swearing at Motorists' "Last Night Becomes This Morning" (Secretly Canadian), a head-clearing work that should be required listening for anyone thinking of starting a band and making a career of it. Spare and unapologetically direct, the album confronts the emotional challenges faced by artists who ultimately recognize that, in spite of constant effort, they are never going to reach the next level. Doughman never arrives at a conclusion as to why he keeps on keepin' on, though the concise indie-rock grooves and delicious hooks suggest that he has no other choice. (Safe Bet)
