I don’t usually talk about my musical activities in this column, but it was suggested this time by my editor and I figured I’d give it a shot because there is a timely hook: the return of my former musical partner Dave Doughman for a rare local Swearing at Motorists show, at Canal Street Tavern next Friday.

I’ve been playing in bands since the early ’80s — some you’ve heard of (Guided by Voices) and others you haven’t (the Hope Fools) — but I experienced many firsts, such as touring Europe, while with Swearing at Motorists from 1995 to 2001. During that six-year stretch we released three seven-inch EPs, a CD EP and three full-lengths and toured regionally, developing followings in cities such as New York, Toronto and Bloomington, Ind. While concert and CD reviews were overwhelmingly positive, money is tight in the indie-rock community and I quit the band in early 2001.

Dave picked up drummer Joseph Siwinski in Philadelphia and continued to tour relentlessly, while I returned to work and family life in Dayton.

I immediately began playing drums for Kentucky Overflow, a group whose low-key approach and lack of career aspirations fit my lifestyle.

Although Dave and Joseph have remained active, they haven’t played Dayton since 2002, but that will change next Friday when Swearing at Motorists returns to Canal Street for a show with Kentucky Overflow and opener Late Nite Drivers.

That evening, I’ll join Dave for a few old-school Motorists tunes, and Tom Byrne and Rod Boggs of KY Overflow will also sit in for a few numbers.

Come join the homecoming fun.
