Swearing at Motorists is not only this surly music writer's favorite pastime, it's also the name of a mighty fine indie rock duo whose appearance at the Map Room on Friday, January 19th, promises to be one of the most exciting musical events to happen at that cozy downtown coffeehouse in quite some time. Generally, if you mention Swearing at Motorists, the first question you will be asked is, "Isn't that some kind of Guided by Voices side project?" The answer is no. While both of SAM's members, Don Thrasher and Dave Doughman, do have connections to Dayton's finest, they aren't exactly coasting on Bob Pollard's beer-soaked coattails. They do have Pollard's gift for the catchy hook and his ability to seamlessly impose pop sensibilities on top of (in their case minimalist) arena rock anthems. Swearing at Motorists is a two-man indie-rock machine that manages to do that which is nearly impossible: wear their influences on their tattered sleeves and produce a fairly original sound at the same time.
