Comment:
Doughman's antics, a combination of Prince, Chuck Berry and Jon Spencer, led one to believe this would be a blooze-rock experience. Not so. While simple riffs were pounded out on an open-tuned guitar, melodically he's closer to Elvis Costello or earlier Built To Spill. He consistently undermined his bravado with his unabashed expression of gratitude for the audience. He was gushing for us and it was kind of cute.

Strengths/ Weaknesses/ Next Step:
Before their time slot, the lead singer, dressed in a suit with an unbuttoned shirt with butterfly collar, commenced arousing the crowd saying, "We're gonna play a 20 dollar set" and "Are you guys ready to rock 'n' roll?" And despite his mustache, the crowd responded to Doughman's hilarious half-stories, non sequitors and rabble rousing. Communion was achieved.

Strengths/ Weaknesses/ Next Step:
Ostensibly, this was less about music, more about a rock 'n' roll show. The songs were short, to the point - he spent as much time chatting up the crowd with his we're-in-this-together cheerleading. Musically, they are a tight unit with great rhythmic passages, tempo changes and, erm, balls.

Strengths/ Weaknesses/ Next Step:
Clearly moved by the audience's responsiveness, Doughman extended the set by a couple of songs - a couple of times. And when, caught up in the moment, he did his last rock jump, he overextended himself and went careening off stage to end the show. That, friends, is rock 'n' roll devotion.
